Learn how to use the multi-tenant to multi-runtime tool to convert a multi-tenant platform into a multi-runtime one.
Overview
Following the commercial depreciation of multi-tenancy use by customers starting with Bonita 2021.1, the technical solution proposed by Bonitasoft for customers willing to have separate Bonita engine database (Oracle, SQL, postgres, etc.) per applications/processes, will be multi-runtimes starting with Bonita 2023.1.
In order to prepare the technical conversion from multi-tenancy to multi-runtime, Bonitasoft developed a dedicated tool - Multi-tenant to multi-runtime conversion tool (MT2MR tool) - available for download on Bonita Customer Portal.
During the execution, the conversion tool will delete everything not related to the tenant specified in the parameter from the given Bonita engine database. This means you will need to create a new Bonita engine database per tenant you want to keep, dump your current Bonita engine database and load it for each new instance.
The conversion tool will have to be executed for every tenant you want to keep, with a dedicated Bonita engine database instance. |
How works Bonita Multi-tenant to Multi-Runtime conversion tool
Pre-requisites

The conversion tool requires Java 11+ JRE

Database with Bonita Multi-tenant Platform.
-
Same number of Bonita engine database instances as the tenant you want to keep.
-
The conversion tool works on Bonita Platform Databases in version 7.11, 7.12, 7.13, 7.14 or 7.15.

During the conversion operation, the Bonita Platform should NOT be running on the database.
Usage: step-by-step procedure
The conversion tool will delete all the tenants as well as all their associated data, except the one provided in the parameter. The chosen tenant will then be set as the default tenant.
Once the execution completes, you will have to upload a new license file before you can use the new database with a Bonita Platform. Use the setup tool to do it, as usual.

Configure the Bonita engine database instances.

Stop Bonita Platform.

Create the Bonita engine database dump.

Specify your database connection information in the application.properties file.

You will need to specify the username/password, as well as your connection information (uncomment & fill in the corresponding template).

Load the dump on each Bonita engine database instance BEFORE the next step

Then run the following command line in a terminal next to the bin folder:
bin/multitenant-to-multiruntime-tool(.bat) <tenantId>
The conversion tool does not change anything in the BDM database. You will have to manage it manually. Error Management

In case of errors during execution, the first step to take is to re-launch the conversion tool. It will automatically pick up the work where it failed/stopped the first time. This works particularly well for temporary problems, like a lost connection to the database.

If failures persist, you can try setting the log levels to different values in the application.properties file to help with the troubleshooting. (It will typically allow you to see the whole stacktrace).

If all of the above fails, contacting bonita support is still an option!
Performance data
The conversion tool was tested on the Bonita supported databases, either on technically generated or real production databases. The execution time depends on the size of your database. The biggest impact on execution time is linked to rows deletion from the tables. Tables that contain binaries and are voluminous on disk as a result go relatively quickly. Typical culprits on production databases are the document, arch_flownode_instance, arch_process_instance tables.
